Major DNA phylogenetic study by Tenorio, Abalde, Pardos-Blas & Zardoya of the cones of West Africa and Cape Verde Islands plus a taxonomic revision was published in the European Journal of Taxonomy resulting in two new species and many species being judged to be synonyms of other existing species.

Africonus  curralensis  was shown to be two distinct species. A. insulae n.sp. is described from Santa Luzia.

The form of K. pulcher from the Canary Islands is shown to be significantly different genetically and is raised to species as Kalloconus canariensis.
