C. brunneobandatus occurs with C. cancellatus. It differs from C. cancellatus in being a consistently smaller shell with a much more truncated, turnip-shaped body. The wide brown band of C. brunneobandatus which often covers most of the body whorl, is also distinctive and is not seen in true C. cancellatus, even in specimens with browb markings C. brunneobandatus also has a much finer body whorl sculpturing, with some specimens having virtually smooth shells devoid of coarse spire cords.
